This project was started regarding the problems rising high in communities. Such problems include:
It is a problem for youths to be sent to higher institutions such as high schools to further their education. Many parents in the villages cannot afford to send their children to these institutions since they do not earn or cannot make the necessary amount of money.

Mr. Kelly’s concern was to minimize or cut down the problems that were rising in his community and the communities around him. So he built a workshop made of bush material and enrolled youths from the communities for training. The students take basic training in,

Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Center has been in operation for six years now and the number of students, both male and female, has gone up to 40.

TONY Adsen |
From: Dangsai village, Karkar Island Year: 2nd Info: After finishing from Dangsai Primary School Adsen lived three years in his village without a job or education.
Now with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre, Adsen wishes to learn as much as he can so he could become an engineer on a ship. |
SONNEY Banix
|
From: North Coast, Madang Age: 18 Year: 1st Info: With the thought that it would take a long time to go up the grades into higher institutions, Banix left school while in the grade of seven to join the Training Centre with intentions to learn as much as possible and get a decent job quickly.
Banix is currently learning 3 trades; Mechanical, Technical, and Marine Electrical. |
MARUS Berom |
From: Patilo Village, Karkar Island Age: 21 Year: 1st Info: After finishing grade 10 in 2007 Berom lived for a year in the village. He then joined the Training Centre in 2009. Whilst with the Training Centre, he has learnt so many things such as using small machines as grinders, and repairing body parts of vehicles.
Berom aims to work on boats or with other companies in the future. |
DAVID Boxie |
From: Sangana Village, Karkar Island Year: 1st Info: Boxie finds Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre enjoyable because of the new things he is learning there such as Electrical Repair work. He hopes to continue training and work with the auto repair centre. |
LUANG Collin |
From: Wadau Village, Karkar Island Age: 21 Year: 4th Info: Without formal education Collin had been living in his village all of the time. When the training centre was established he decided to join in with the training to learn ‘something’ to make himself more useful in his village and also earn a few toea while doing so. |
SUMON Dibul

From: Muluk Village, Karkar Island Year: 1st Info: Dibul had dropped out in grade six. Without any further education he remained in his village for about 20 years doing what every villager does in his village. It came to a point where Dibul decided to further his knowledge so he decided to join the training centre. He is now learning to fix engines, generators, and other machines such as lawnmowers.
If there is a chance job opportunities are available for him outside he will take it. Otherwise, he is prepared to train and work with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre. |
SAUL Gilbert

From: Muluk Village, Karkar Island Year: 1st Info: Gilbert was with the Talidig Vocational Centre, in Madang, for two years. He then did two months practical with Kulili Estates. He is now doing job experience with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre.
He says that the government should help the training centre build permanent workshops and help with new tools. The training centre has taken an important place on the Island as all communities benefit from it. Youths are taken into the training centre leaving bad habits behind. |
ASANG Jobby |
From: Wadau Village, Karkar Island Year: 1st Info: Jobby finished grade 8 in 2007. He then attended Karkar Vocational Centre in 2008. He is now doing his practical with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre. He intends to continue education after he finishes his practical work. |
PANU Josephine

From: Kurum Village, Karkar island Age: 18 Year: 1st Info: After finishing from Karkar High School, Josephine lived in her village for a year when she heard from friends about the training centre and what was taught there. At first she thought that mechanical work was hard work and only men could do it. Now, with the training centre, and being the only woman, she sees that the job is easy and women can do it. Josephine had experienced taking out the gear-box of a vehicle, repairing it, and then replacing it. Apart from this, she is learning to fix engines.
Whilst at school, Josephine never thought of becoming a mechanic and thought of it as a dirty job. Now she says being a mechanic is good because after you retire from working you can still be useful and make money in the villages.
Josephine encourages other women out there to join in. |
DALID Koss

From: Muluk Village, Karkar Island Year: 1st Info: Being unfortunate not having a placing in higher institutions after finishing from Abisan Primary School, Koss remained in his village for fourteen years. Whilst there, he did short courses on business.
When Karkar Vocational Centre was established in 2005, Koss did his first year there the year later. In 2007 he did his field work with Kulili Estates for only two months then graduated from the vocational centre later in that year.
Koss is now doing practical work with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre and wishes to continue to a technical school for further studies. |
MADONG Leo |
From: Boroman Village, Karkar Island Age: 24 Year: 2nd Info: Leo is currently with the Karkar Vocation Centre. He had been placed here with Kel’s Auto Repair for practical work as part of his assessments. |
AWAN Leon |
From: Wadau Village, Karkar Island Year: 4th Info: Before joining the training centre, Leon was just an ordinary village boy. Now, after four years of training, experience, and working with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre he is prepared to work with organizations outside his village or his Island. |
LABUN Mianung |
From: Wadau Village, Karkar Island Year: 2nd Info: Like few of the students here, Mianung was a simple villager. Realizing that mechanical work is useful in villages, he entered the training centre in 2008. He now knows how to use tools such as welding-machines and grinders. He is also learning a bit of electrical work. |
NORM Pokanau |
From: Dangsai Village, Karkar Island Age: 18 Year: 1st Info: Norm was unfortunate to have a place after his grade 8 graduation. After hearing about the training centre Mr. Kelly had set up, he was interested in what was trained there. It has been a year after he joined the centre and Norm thinks of applying to a vocational centre for further studies. He plans to do this after another year with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre. |
MATEI Tamtiai |
From: Wadau Village, Karkar Island Age: 20 Year: 4th Info: Having gained a lot of experience with Kel’s Auto Repair & Training Centre, Tamtiai is ready to find a job outside Karkar. He was a simple villager but now has the skills of an engineer. His experiences include working on boat engines and electrical work which he gained while working around Karkar Island. |
MANGEM Oscar |
From: Liloi Village, Karkar Isalnd Age: 24 Info: Before training Oscar was a simple villager without any formal education. Having had the chance to be in a training centre like this one, he aims to learn as much as he can to become a good mechanic so he can go out and find a job. |

OUR LOCATION

We are located on the eastern part of Karkar Island which is situated approximately fifty (50) kilometers northeast of Madang town in the Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. On the island, we are situated in the least developed part of Karkar Isalnd, known as Last Karkar. The Last Karkar area comprises of Kubam, Yukyuk, Burag, Kurubek, Wadau and Muluk villages, with an estimated population of five thousand people. We are situated in Wadau Village.
